Another poor performance in net for the Wild, Tuesday night against the Penguins, in which Niklas Backstrom allowed 6 goals on 35 shot before getting pulled. With the final score being 7-2, GM Chuck Fletcher, said enough is enough; we need someone else in net.
Welcome in Devan Dubnyk; the Wild traded their 3rd round pick in the upcoming draft to Arizona for Dubnyk. The former 1st round draft pick has spent most of his career in Edmonton before heading to Arizona this season. Dubnyk is only under a one-year-contract right now, so unless he plays amazing, this looks like a renter deal for the Wild. They still think they can win this season but after their embarrassing 7-2 loss to Pittsburgh, they have a lot of ground to make up.
What can the Wild expect from Dubnyk? Although he wasn’t the starter in Arizona, Dubnyk had a 9-5-2 record with a save percentage of .916 (higher then all three of the Minnesota Wild’s goalies). With adding Dubnyk, the Wild add another 6’6” goalie from Saskatchewan, Canada (Kuemper is the other one). Dubnyk’s best season came in 2011-12 with the Oiler, where he picked up 20 wins.
My thoughts on Dubnyk
The Wild don’t want to get rid of their young talent, so they give up a third round draft pick, I’m okay with that. They don’t want to spend a lot of money on a renter goalie, so they get Dubnyk who is only making 800,000 this season. I think that is very smart, they Wild have bigger fish to sign before giving a goalie a lot of money (Granlund, Haula, Folin). They are trying to do everything they can before giving Mike Yeo the boot. Don’t get me wrong, I think Mike Yeo is a great coach but the NHL is a business and if you don’t win, you out its as simple as that. Yeo has a very talented team but he just can’t get all the pieces to come together right now. Dubnyk has to save Mike Yeo’s job. I give it a month. If the Wild pull it together and get hot in this next month, the fans will be happy, GM Fletcher will be happy, and Yeo will keep his job. On the other hand if the continue to struggle, Mike Yeo will be out, the Wild collapse, and the Minnesota fans will be irate on this wasted season for the Wild.
The Wild take on the Buffalo Sabres tonight and Dubnyk could be getting his debut in a Wild’s uniform (PLEASE DON’T LOSE TO THE SABRES)!
